How can we adopt a more embodied and truthful approach to science and healing that aligns with nature? John Hughes, an osteopathic doctor at Aspen Integrative Medicine, delves into this question in his latest book titled “Fifth World Medicine (Book II): The Science of Healing People and Their Planet.”
On Sunday, June 11, at 4:30 p.m., Hughes will discuss his book at Explore Booksellers in Aspen, shedding light on personal anecdotes, philosophical arguments, and practical suggestions to reconnect the body, mind, spirit, and our relationship with nature and the planet as a whole.
Hughes notes that the prevailing paradigms of the Fourth World are starting to crumble, especially concerning our understanding of truth through science and the pursuit of effective medicine.
Initially, Hughes considered science to be imperative and an absolute source of facts. However, as he delved deeper, he discovered that the world is more nuanced and complex than he had realized. In a phone interview, he expressed that he has found a way to trust his intuition, allowing him to understand the world and contemplate nature in a manner that can be equally truthful as science. He believes there is a higher, more sustainable approach to science and medicine by deepening our relationship with the Earth and cultivating a healthier connection with our bodies, which he refers to as the Fifth World.
According to Hughes, the Fifth World is discovered through profound wonderment and intimacy with nature—the same nature that constitutes the essence of our bodies and spirits. He highlights the philosophical foundation of his book, influenced partly by his academic background, having obtained a master’s degree in theological studies from Duke University. Hughes asserts that comprehending philosophy establishes a strong groundwork for implementing the changes he advocates, including dietary habits, work routines, and investment decisions.
“We have forgotten the sanctity of the body. Learning to integrate this leads to healing,” Hughes affirms. He emphasizes that if there is one message he wants to convey, it is the return to Aristotle’s ultimate science, merging the body, mind, and spirit into a sacred unity. This approach does not seek to control or save nature but rather aims to reintegrate it and foster a connection with the body, mind, and spirit.
In his book, Hughes explores the approaches of indigenous cultures, honoring their non-linear thinking and holistic perspectives. Departing from the confines of scientific dogma, he employs his osteopathic training, which involves considering the entire body, encompassing lifestyle and environment, rather than narrowly focusing on a single “disease.” Hughes posits that dualistic thinking and linear scientific methods have contributed, if not caused, the decline of human well-being in contemporary times.
He encourages individuals to directly experience nature by disconnecting from electronic devices and simply connecting with the natural world, even through interactions with pets.
“Anything that takes us away from the constant mental realm of incessant thinking,” he suggests.
Hughes also advocates for the creation of a more sustainable world, such as replacing plastic with biodegradable brown seaweed for packaging. He emphasizes that we cannot enhance our well-being by destroying the planet in the process.
While the Fourth World revolves around manipulating nature for human benefit, the Fifth World contemplates the divine purpose of every living entity, be it a cow or a plant, aiming to support, respect, and coexist harmoniously with nature.
“It is about honoring the sacredness of nature,” Hughes asserts. He describes the Fifth World as a realm grounded in the heart, where humans live as integrated beings of spirit, body, and mind, promoting peace among others and the well-being of all nature in harmony with the synchronized cosmic order.
Hughes encourages readers to introspect and inquire, “What kind of power resides within the minuscule, holographic, and atomic aspects of yourself? When contemplating power, recognize and feel that at the submicroscopic and atomic levels, within the wave-particle reality of your life, immense energy and boundless potential exist.”
